Coffe Shop Burn-Out: First Date Ideas That Don’t Involve Starbucks

There’s a lot to be said for the first-meeting coffee-date. It’s easy, economic, public, and the simplicity of it helps you keep your focus where it should be—getting to know your date. But if you’re looking for a change of venue, here are some other options for low-key first dates.

There’s a lot to be said for the first-meeting coffee-date.  It’s easy, economic, public, and because the most complicated activity involved is raising a cup to your lips every few minutes, it helps you keep your focus where it should be—getting to know your date.  Never be ashamed to suggest the coffee meeting.  It is always a great idea.

That said, if you’ve been on several first dates recently, you may be burned out on the coffee meet-up.  You also might be concerned that the cute barista at your local Starbucks is beginning to wonder why you’re with a different woman every week.  Well, if you’re looking to branch out on the first date, here are a few ideas.

Picnic in the Park

This is a great idea if you have a killer chicken salad recipe, because it gives you an opportunity to impress while still keeping the date low key, public, and centered on conversation.  If you decide to go this route, remember to keep it simple.  Don’t try to pull out any super romantic moves like champagne in crystal flutes, and stay on your side of the blanket . . . at least through the main course.  Also remember that if you present the picnic invitation, you’re responsible for the grub.  If your date offers to bring something, great, but don’t make it their responsibility.

Local Museum

Museums are great because they offer a lot of opportunity for conversation.  You’re surrounded by exhibits that inspire discussion.  And because it’s not highly interactive, you can choose to ignore or focus on your environment depending on how well your date is going.

Miniature Golf

Like the museum, mini golf is a great option because the activity itself can inspire conversation if you run into an awkward lull in the chit-chat.  Another bonus is that a little competition can make for some good flirting . . . just be sure your date isn’t the super competitive type.  A damaged ego can really destroy an otherwise enjoyable date.

Go for a Hike

Or a walk.  Or a bike ride.  If you’re both active people who enjoy getting outside, this could be a great way to share an interest that still allows you to keep talking and getting to know one another.  But do be careful.  If you’re meeting this person face-to-face for the first time, make sure you stay in public, well-populated areas.

Whatever you decide to do for the first meeting, remember that it’s okay—and even smart—to keep it simple.  First dates come with enough anxiety; no need to overwhelm yourself with a super complex plan or a dinner bill that will max out your credit card.  Just keep it public and comfortable and let yourself enjoy the occasion of meeting someone new.
